Representing the Southern Region, Ms Aminata F Kandeh is a resident of Bo District, holder of a Bsc Hons in Aquaculture and Fisheries Management, a diploma in National Adaptation Plans, Building climate Resilience in Agriculture, a certificate in Extension Services and also a certificate in Entrepreneurship.
Upon graduation, she was employed by different organizations that helped to fortify her experiences in her interest area some of which were; Restless Development (2013), GOAL SL (2014), Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (2015), World Fish Center (2016), West Africa Rice Company (2017) and BRAC SL (2018) and also have participated in various youth programs and entrepreneurship training within and out of the country.
She represented Sierra Leone at the Young Africa Leader’s Initiative in Ghana 2017, South Africa in 2018 for the Obama Africa Leadership program and Nigeria 2019 for Tech Build Point Entrepreneurship program. In 2016, whilst working in Tonkolili District (Nothern Region), as Agriculture/Aquaculture Research assistant at the World Fish Center traveling to remote communities and learning about wetland environment in the country, it was then she realized that people in rural communities find it very difficult to access fresh and healthy fish, due to poor infrastructures like poor road network, lack of storage facilities, and power supply. And as a result of this, most of the children under five years, pregnant women, and suckling mothers are malnourished in these communities.
Interested to make a change to address the need which was felt even upon her return to her home town in Bo, at the closure of the World Fish Centre project in 2017 she decided to start her own fish farming business, Agro Fish Farm Ltd to test and see how she can start meeting the demand for fresh fish in her community and progressively expand.
She has been able to provide 5,000 fresh farmed fish to over 100 householders in Bo and its environs at a very affordable price and as well provide a job for 20 youths and women in Bo town. She looks forward to increasing her deployment units(fish ponds) creating more jobs targeting an increase in production level from 5tons to 10tons making more fresh fish available in the rural market.
Going forward in 2021 as an ambassador, the areas in would focus on are: creating more unit in my business which will provide more jobs for youths and women in Bo town, second, to increase our production from 5tons to 10tons so that we can provide more fish to more households in BO and its environs. Finally encourage more youths and women to create a positive impact in their communities and also build their capacity in fish farming.
